Learning Makes Cents
Learning Makes Cents is a reading incentive program coordinated by the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas and sponsored by Pizza Hut, Inc. The goal of the program is to encourage and provide financial incentives for youth to read in hopes of improving a child's reading and comprehension skills a whole grade level.
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver and former employee of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, Patrick Crayton, is serving as the Learning Makes Cents ambassador and will visit the Club to tour the learning center and talk about the importance of reading.
How It Works
The Learning Makes Cents Software allows access to hundreds of books and stories for all ages and reading levels. Each book and story comes with a test for the student to complete. The more books a student reads, the more they will be rewarded.
Students ages 6-14 are eligible to participate in the program.
Books are available in English and Spanish.
Once enrolled, a student will take a Benchmark Reading Assessment to determine the appropriate reading level.
Staff will identify students who have not performed well on their TAKS Reading Test and report card in reading or students that would like to improve their grade point averages.
The student will go through an orientation session for reading the books online, taking the tests and eligibility for incentives.
The student will use a personal log-in for the software to begin reading books and stories at their assigned reading level.
After a successfully completed book and comprehension test, a student is rewarded .
Quarterly recognition ceremonies will be held in each Boys & Girls Club location and a special visit with Patrick Crayton.
A final recognition ceremony will be held and the top students from each of the 10 Boys & Girls Clubs locations where they program is implemented will receive a special award and time with Patrick Crayton.
