CEO Corner: Celebrating Life, Supporting Families

Almost seven years ago, while interviewing for a role at Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, I had the privilege of witnessing one of our signature events in action: our Prom Dress Extravaganza. I was in awe of the incredible energy and generosity, but one moment stood out to me forever, and helped me find my space at this organization.

I noticed a teenage girl rushing toward the bathroom, tears streaming down her face, clutching a dress. As a mother of two daughters, I asked if she was okay. She shared that her mom had just passed away from breast cancer, and she had no one to help her find a dress. As a breast cancer survivor myself, hearing her story hit me hard.

It reminded me why the work we do at BGCD matters so deeply. We’re not just hosting events or programs, we’re creating spaces where kids feel seen, supported, and celebrated, even in life’s hardest moments. From helping a girl feel beautiful at prom to supporting families navigating illness and loss, our mission is to lift up children and families when they need it most.

Breast cancer awareness isn’t only about fighting the disease; it’s about understanding its ripple effects on families, especially children. At BGCD, we strive to fill those gaps, offering support, guidance, and moments of joy when life feels overwhelming. Small acts of care, like helping a girl find the perfect dress, can carry enormous meaning and lasting comfort.

We also believe in empowering girls with knowledge and skills to take care of their health and well-being. Through programs like SMART Girls, we educate girls about healthy living, self-esteem, body image, and making positive choices; lessons that help them build confidence and resilience as they navigate life’s challenges. These programs complement our emotional support, ensuring kids are equipped to thrive in every way possible.

That experience reinforced for me that every child deserves love, attention, and a community that stands with them. At BGCD, we’re proud to be that community honoring survivors, remembering those we’ve lost, supporting health and wellness education, and bringing hope and joy to the young people who need it most.
